How to Install Fiberglass Insulation?

- Aug 29, 2018-

The installation of fiberglass insulation in the attic may be a basic task, but the material itself is surprisingly complex. When the fiberglass is woven into a roll or bat shape, they form millions of tiny, irregular holes. Air is a gas and a good conductor of heat energy. Together, these pockets prevent three forms of energy movement: conduction(energy passes through solids), convection(energy passes through gases or liquids), and radiation(energy passes through waves or particles), such as light).
"If people have any hope of realizing the full potential of insulation, they need to understand the fundamentals," said Bruce Harley, an engineer dedicated to energy efficiency. The first step, he said, was closure. Insulation is porous, and air moves through it to reduce the R-value, or resistance to heat flow. Use spray foam and aluminum scintillation around wires and pipes. Rigid foam boards can cover water pipe holes and pipe chases or foam on kitchen cabinets, as well as pipe seal leaking air conditioning pipes.
